Motivation to Learn
This course focuses on four primary influences on the motivation to learn. Beliefs and values, intrinsic motivation, learning goals, and socio-cultural factors are highlighted. Interventions and approaches to instructional design that may impact motivation to learn are discussed. The research discussed in this course includes both laboratory and field research from multiple disciplines including developmental psychology, social psychology, education, and cognitive psychology. Included is a discussion of fostering motivation to learn by helping learners perceive the learning environment as a place where they belong and creating an environment that promotes their sense of agency and purpose. Interventions presented help educators support learner motivation by attending to their engagement, persistence, and performance.
This course is based upon material published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in How People Learn II: Learners, Contexts, and Cultures, and is available as an open access article.
This course on learning motivation is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of the motivation for learning. The course material includes a review of interventions designed to improve learning motivation. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
