Course Description:

Non-binary people, who have gender identities other than male or female, have unique needs when interacting with the health care system.  Non-binary people face numerous health disparities as well as stigma, discrimination, and a lack of access to quality care.  Practitioners need not specialize in non-binary health care to give non-binary patients an affirming experience.  Many providers do not feel prepared to address such topics with patients; however, all members of a health care organization can be easily equipped to have inclusive conversations.  This course is designed as a stepping stone to help health care organizations implement simple changes to improve the experiences of patients with non-binary gender identities.  This course is based upon material published by the National LGBT Health Education Center, a program of the Fenway Institute, and is available as an open access article.

This course on affirmative care for patients with non-binary gender identities is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work.  This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of caring for patients with non-binary gender identities.  The course material includes a review of terms and definitions, case scenarios, and expert-informed practices for non-binary gender individuals.  It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
