Course Description:

This course details the factors that have substantial implications for clients who suffer from mental and-or substance use illnesses who seek care that is respectful and responsive to their individual preferences, needs, and values. Stigma and discrimination are reviewed as the result of concerns about impaired decision making and the risk of violence experienced by this population. Coerced treatment as a factor in moving the source of control for treatment decisions is covered. The course closes with a discussion of specific actions that all clinicians, organizations, accrediting bodies, health plans, and purchasers involved in health care should take to ensure patient-centered care is provided to individuals with mental and-or substance use illnesses. Further actions to preserve patient-centered care when coercion into treatment is unavoidable are also discussed.

This course is based upon material published in the National Academies Press and is available as an open access article.

This course on patient-centered care for individuals who suffer from mental and-or substance use illnesses is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work.
