Course Description:
This course is based upon material complied by the Addictions Training Institute for a certification program for peer counselors. The content is condensed and excerpted from at TAP published by SAMHSA, whose materials are freely available.

The course begins with an overview and definition of addiction and relapse. Elements of recovery are reviewed from the perspective of the developmental model. Stages of recovery are discussed. Categories of relapse history are reviewed and relapse prevention treatment is defined in detail. Principals of relapse prevention are reviewed in detail. Basic counseling skills for the delivery of relapse prevention programs are also reviewed.

This course on relapse prevention is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of substance abuse treatment.
