Course Description:

The treatment of addiction as a biological, psychological, social, and spiritual disease requires a high standard of ethical knowledge and professional skill. This groundbreaking, reader-friendly guide to contemporary ethical issues informs and challenges health care professionals, students, and faculty with a thorough and compassionate examination of the dilemmas faced when providing care for individuals suffering from substance use problems or addiction. This course is based upon a collection of materials edited by Dr. Cynthia M. A. Gepppert and Laura Weiss Roberts, published by Hazelden Foundation.

The Book of Ethics is designed to acquaint substance abuse professionals with the ethical aspects of treatment.  Major topics include the therapeutic relationship, ethical issues specific to women and to children and adolescents, dilemmas in chronic pain treatment in the context of addiction, and the ethics of harm reduction.  Concepts are illustrated with case examples.  This course on the ethical implications of substance abuse treatment is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work in substance abuse treatment.  This course is appropriate for beginning and intermediate level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of ethics. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require ethics continuing education courses for license renewal.

Editors:  Cynthia M. A. Geppert, MD, PhD, MPH and Laura Weiss Roberts, MD, MA
