This is an online training to be hosted on EMDR HAP’s website. This workshop is designed to provide an introduction to EMDR therapy, with an overview of the treatment process. It will also explore the use of the EMDR Recent Event Protocol with victims of community violence, especially with the victims of violent crimes. Case examples will focus on survivors of homicide, individuals whom have had a member of their family murdered, recently or in the past. The format use will include PowerPoint, case examples, audiotape of a client session and discussion.

Workshop Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe a working definition of Eye Movement and Desensitization (EMDR) therapy.
  • Participant will be able to identify the demographics related to what key age groups are at the greatest risk for homicide.
  • Participants will be able to identify a minimum of three common reactions of survivors, to the homicide of a family member.
  • Participant will be able to define the eight key questions use to identify the target, to be desensitized with EMDR therapy.

 

Donald F. deGraffenried, LCSW – Joined the Trauma Recovery EMDR HAP staff in April of 2015 and his role is as the Program and Community Development Director. He is a passionate advocate for expanding EMDR into agency and community mental health settings and has started several agency based EMDR programs.He is especially interested in using EMDR in agency settings to work with the survivors of homicide.

deGraffenried is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, Approved Facilitator and a Senior Trainer for the Trauma Recovery EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs. deGraffenried was invited to present papers at the EMDR International Association Annual Conferences in 2002 (San Diego), 2005 (Seattle), 2007 (Dallas), 2008 (Phoenix), 2009 (Atlanta) and 2010 (Minneapolis). In 2006 he was elected to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors for the EMDR International Association. He is the author of four articles on home-based family interventions with multi problem families. In April of 2007 his article “EMDR and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) Recipients: A Case Study of Trauma Treatment in The Home” was published by the EMDR International Association Newsletter. This article describes the home based use of EMDR with a victim of domestic violence, using a strength based, solution oriented and brief treatment model. DeGraffenried resides in Hamden, Ct., in close proximity to the legendary Sleeping Giant State Park and he is an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle rider.
