A Novel Therapeutic Frame for Treating Depression in Group
Course Description: This course is based upon material published in the Sage journal article and is available as an open access article.
We describe an original protocol Treating Depression Downhill (TDD) that was designed as a specific therapy for depression. Evolutionary theories of depression served as a basis for its development. We discuss the rationale for using evolutionary theory and describe the structure and integrative nature of TDD. We then present an observation on TDD’s application to group therapy of active duty military personnel. In the described sample, TDD demonstrated effectiveness and specificity for depression, differentiating it from anxiety and personality disorders.
This course on treating depression in groups is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of the protocol Treating Depression Downhill and its effectiveness in treating depression. The course presents applications of the Treating Depression Downhill protocol especially within military personnel. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
The course is based on a journal article which includes research. It contains statistical analysis and data that some clinicians enjoy reading and others do not. A major benefit of reading research based articles for continuing education is they provide practitioners with the latest findings in their field.
Learning Objectives: This course will provide the practitioner with detailed information regarding the treating depression downhill protocol. Specifically, a professional will:
Describe an original protocol Treating Depression Downhill used for treating depression.
Identify the rationale for using evolutionary theories of depression as the basis for TDD protocol.
Recognize the effectiveness and specificity for depression demonstrated by the TDD protocol.
