This workshop for licensed counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and marriage and family therapists, will provide an overview of the treatment of relational trauma as described by Pia Mellody, RN, with a focus on attachment theory. The workshop is appropriate for the seasoned practitioner, those experienced in other forms or trauma treatment as well as the newly licensed clinician. Pia Mellody’s comprehensive model, Post Induction Therapy, is both a “top down” and a “bottom up” approach.  Specifically, there is a behavioral component, “top down”, which creates lifestyle changes through striving for balance in what Pia Mellody calls the “core issues”.  Also essential are “from the bottom up” interventions and procedures for successful healing of relational trauma, without which balance in the core issues is difficult or impossible. Attachment and interpersonal neurobiology theory will be used as support in understanding this model. During experiential supervised practice participants use their own family history and experiences to gain a better understanding of how to apply this work in their own lives and with their clients.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the five Core Issues as described by Pia Mellody and the importance of helping clients develop moderation in each of them.
  • Identify at least three boundary violations and have strategies for helping clients stop engaging in them.
  • Define the three experiential processes for healing relational trauma according to the Post Induction Therapy model.

This workshop is the first in a series of two and is intended to be followed by Practical Aspects of Trauma Treatment:  The Inner Child and Feelings Reduction Techniques of Pia Mellody’s Post-Induction Therapy
