Master Class Overview

Going Deeper into Personality Disorders & Character Structure: A Three-Day Master Course Intensive with Supervised Practicum This 3-day workshop will address how to use EMDR Therapy with clients who most challenge their therapists because of their characterological issues and attachment styles that can elicit negative counter-transferential responses. These patients frequently present with obsolete & dysfunctional adaptations that they continue to use in their current life situations, often engaging us to co-create a similar dynamic in the therapeutic dyad. This workshop will provide therapists with critical tools to explore and develop strategies for addressing the characterological difficulties that are too often considered intractable by mental health practitioners. A major focus of this workshop will be to help clinicians become aware of and work on their own patterns of response to these challenging clients, thus increasing awareness, flexibility and clinical effectiveness. An important therapeutic task in these cases is to identify these maladaptive patterns in a way that motivates the client to develop new, alternative patterns of response that will be more adaptive to their current life demands than what worked in childhood. In this workshop, participants will learn conceptual maps that outline the inhibitory and excitatory patterns of response that, not only inform a working understanding of the client’s difficulties in their lives, but how these same patterns inform the client’s response to us as well as to the processing demands of EMDR therapy. Participants will also have the opportunity to work on their own patterns of response to these clients in practica so that they can develop their own alternative patterns of response to more effectively navigate the moment to moment demands. This workshop is an invitation to explore what is implicit and automatic in us as well as our clients, and make it explicit, conscious and deliberate, thereby broadening our capacities to be with our clients as well as with our own experience, co-creating the space where coming into one’s authentic self is possible.

Participants will be able to:

  • Conceptualize the client’s problems of daily living and develop a treatment plan through identifying one or more maladaptive patterns of response
  • Identify relevant memories for EMDR reprocessing based on a working understanding of the client’s current maladaptive coping strategies
  • Differentiate between a client’s survival response versus a social engagement response using Porges’ Theory of Social Engagement

Attendance Requirements

Full completion of an EMDRIA approved basic EMDR training is required. Familiarity with Francine Shapiro’s text, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Basic Principles, Protocols and Procedures is strongly suggested.
