Course Description:
This course is a review of both ethics and law regarding the practice of psychology in California.  The material for this course from two different sources, the American Psychological Association (APA) and from the California Board of Psychology.

This first part of this course is a review of the American Psychological Association, APA, Code of Conduct.  Updated in 2003, this Ethics Code applies to psychologists’ activities that are part of their scientific, educational and professional roles as psychologist.

Remember the core ethical principals and standards of practice for psychology.  You probably have not reviewed the Code of Ethics since graduate school.  Read the APA’s Code of Ethics for a review of the foundations of our field.

The Second part of this course comes from the California Board of Psychology.  The preface states that this is the 2012 edition of the California of the Laws and Regulations Relating to the Practice of Psychology.  This is the latest edition being provided by the Board, and incorporates the 2010 and 2011 legislative enactments.

This course will remind you of the core principles that should guide all clinical practice, regardless of setting and client population. It is targeted for beginner, intermediate and advanced psychologists. It is also appropriate for mental health professionals from other disciplines, such as social workers, mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists who are interested in another perspective on ethics.

The questions for the exam follow the order of the material that is provided.  The first 18 questions are on the APA code of Ethics .  Questions 19-35  are based on the Pamphlet.

Learning Objectives: This course will provide a professional with a review of common ethical problems faced by mental health professionals as well as ways to avoid them as well as California law regarding the practice of psychology.  Specifically, a professional will able to:

·  Identify the general principles to which psychologists’ work should aspire

·  Summarize the ethical standards to which psychologists’ work must adhere

·  Identify relevant California law regarding the practice of psychology
