Motivation and Treatment Interventions for Alcohol Use Disorders
Course Description:
This course is based upon course material developed and deployed by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The course material was specifically developed for the training of clinicians who work with clients who may use or abuse alcohol. This course material begins by describing the process of moving an individual from assessment and diagnosis into treatment intervention. The first section discusses non-adherence and ways to enhance client adherence. Interventions are discussed as they relate to the technique of motivational interviewing. The second section of this course addresses the empirical support for various types of alcohol treatment interventions. These interventions specifically include
Brief Interventions (for at-risk drinkers)
Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Relationship Enhancement Therapy
Pharmacotherapy
It is important for clinicians to understand the premises that underlie these interventions, and to become familiar with the empirical support for applying these approaches with different types of client populations.
This course on motivational interviewing the diagnosis and assessment of alcohol problems is useful for clinical social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, and chemical dependency counselors who practice and need continuing education. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of alcohol abuse and dependence treatment interventions and motivational interviewing.
