Course Description:
This course is based on an article published by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a division of the National Institute of Health and is part of their Research Report Series. The publication can also be found on the National Institute on Drug Abuse website. The publication describes comorbidity and the state of science in this area.
 
In the directors introduction, he writes that it is essential to realize that drug addiction is a mental illness, a complex brain disease characterized by a set of behaviors that stem from drug-induced changes in brain structure and function. He goes on to state that these changes occur in areas of the brain that are disrupted in other mental disorders.
 
This is a well written and easy to read article, full of well designed graphics and important information.   The in depth subject matter is easy to read and understand. This course is an excellent reference for professional counselors, clinical social workers, addiction counselors and nurses who work in the areas of substance abuse treatment and or prevention and want a ce course on comorbidity.
 
This course may also be helpful for dieticians and nutritionists who in the area of addictions. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their clinical skills with women and middle aged clients.
