Course Description:

This CEU course is based on a well written publication by the Institute of Aging and the National Institutes of Health. It begins with a brief overview of Alzheimers and goes on to provide in depth information regarding the latest research findings in the etiology, biological risk factors, cognitive decline and developing treatments. Advances in the detection of Alzheimers Disease are also reviewed. The latest research on therapies that treat, delay or prevent Alzheimers are appraised. Support for caregivers and the social and economic risk factors for Alzheimers are also discussed.

This publication is an excellent resource for nurses, psychologists and clinical social workers who work with the elderly or with Alzheimers patients. It contains simple yet detailed descriptions of disease progression, treatments and outcomes for Alzheimers. There are beautiful illustrations within the text as well as video clips (the links are within the course document) that explain key points.

Psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists and certified addiction professionals who work with the elderly can learn a great deal about Alzheimers Disease from this course. This course may also be helpful for other practitioners, such as midwives and dieticians and nutritionists who may work in team or multidisciplinary environments. This course is designed mainly for clinicians and direct service providers. It is targeted for intermediate and advanced practitioners.
